Notoginseng (also known as panax notoginseng or pseudoginseng) can be found eastern Asia and is in the same family as the more well-known ginseng.
Notoginseng is famous in China for its blood circulation properties and cardiovascular[1] benefits. It is considered to be a blood regulator in traditional Chinese medicine. Very often found in herbal dit da jow and trauma formulas, notoginseng is used to stop bleeding, reduce swelling and alleviate pain[2]. It is an herb that is taken both internally and applied externally for many bleeding disorders. For a topical usage example, notoginseng is the largest ingredient in Yunnan Bai Yao, a famous hemostatic proprietary herbal remedy that was notably carried by the Viet Cong to deal with wounds during the Vietnam war[3].
As an interesting note, a study found that when san qi is taken internally, athletes had a measurable increase in physical endurance[4]. (Eating Battle Balm® will most likely get you sick due to some of the non-edible ingredients. We highly highly recommend that you do not eat our products.)
